Trouble loading Family Tree Maker 2012

I was very interested to receive the disk for Family Tree Maker 2012 from Ancestry.com. It came in the mail yesterday and in the evening I started the process of installing the program, without success. Before going further, I need to give a little background. If you read these posts, you probably know that I have quite a bit of experience with computers, operating systems and programs on both the Macintosh and PC/Windows formats. I use an iMac running Mac OS X 10.7.2 Lion with Parallels Desktop 7 and Windows 7. I have been running Family Tree Maker 2010 for the Mac Version 19.2.1.241 for some time without any problems. I also run Family Tree Maker for the PC 2010 Version 19.0.0.206  for sometime without any problems.

When I first inserted the CD with the new Family Tree Maker 2012 program, I immediately got an error message saying that it needed Windows.net Framework 4 to run. I downloaded Framework and installed the upgrades from Microsoft. (That is a whole other issue but I am really tired of constant upgrades from Microsoft even though I am glad they are working on their program). I then tried to install the program again. Here is a screen shot of the error message:

Clicking either to resume installation or to download a new copy of the data ends up in a loop with no results. I cannot remember the last time I had a problem loading a new program. I have been running Parallels for years without any compatibility problems at all. Period. If I clicked on either option, I get the error message as follows:

I tried re-installing Framework 4 using Internet Explorer and then did an additional upgrade to the program. All in vain so far. I have not made it past the two error messages. Keep posted for additional developments. I haven't seen the program yet so I can't comment on any of the new features.

  1. James, if a techno-savy person like you is having problems, can you imagine how it would be for the rest of us who are just users??

  2. I don't know if this is the same problem, but I couldn't install FTM 2012 Beta on my Windows 7 computer unless I right-clicked on the FTM program icon and then selected to run as an Administrator. This was necessary even though I was logged in as an Admin. I have never had to do this with any other software.

  3. Have you tried VirtualBox instead of Parallels? I've gotten tired of problems with Parallels and switched with no problems thus far; and it's free.

  4. I realized I had opened the FTM 2012 CD on the Mac instead of the Windows side in Parallels. The way my system is set up, there is a window that opens when I insert a CD - you can select the CD to open in either Mac or Windows. It defaults to Mac and I didn't pay attention to this when I tried it first. I "ejected" the CD, removed and reinserted it. This time I was careful to select Windows to open it. The error message about .NET came up, but when I clicked on continue, the wizard started up like it's supposed to. It then installed the .NET framework I thought I had already installed, but what the heck, as long as it works...The program is on the desktop an it seems to be starting up OK. So it may be a matter of how you have Parallels configured to deal with CD's.

  5. I am having the exact same problem. I got the disk in the mail today. It gets stuck at 86% on file Tutorial5.flv and stays there forever. I cancelled and tried "run as administrator". Same problem. I am using Windows 7 32 bit. I also disable the anitvirus and firewall software. It seemed to go along ok downloading tutorial1,2,3 and 4. Just got stuck on 5.

  6. I got around this problem for 2011 and 2012 by simply copying all the files on the disk to the hard drive and launching from there.

  8. I've still got Vista Home Premium, but experienced a similar problem. The Installation of Family Treemaker 2012 Upgrade got almost to the end and then I receive the same now irritating and boring message Error Invalid Drive H:\ After 7 days of trying even contacting Customer Support, nothing has worked. I just hope I haven't done any damage by trying to follow reconfiguration instructions to try to sort out the Drive Letter. Any help gratefully received Andrew

--Created a folder on the desktop and moved 2012 installation files into it
--Inserted a thumb drive, named it E:\
--Changed destination folder to the thumb drive
--Clicked "set up" application from thumb drive folder, and it successfully installed within minutes.

  12. Just bought the software FTM Platinum 2012 and the disk is not recognised? It doesn't even register in MY COMPUTER, Surely all these problems could be resolved if the software could be downloaded and a code was entered. This is perthetic for the money you pay

  13. I had FTM 2012 Deluxe installed on my laptop and it worked fine. The hard drive on my laptop had to be replaced and I have installed FTM ok, but am unable to open it. Do I need to install something to open the programme?

  14. I learned more from this site than FTM customer service. After repeated phone calls and waiting a month for a replacement disk, the program still did not open. I read the suggestion to "right click and run as administrator." That worked.
