175,000+ New Free Databases in Mocavo

Almost 3 months ago, Mocavo.com announced that any content put onto the website would be "free forever."  In checking at the time of this post,  they presently have 178,182 collections on their website. The bulk of the collections on the website fall into the "histories" category but that category contains a wide variety of different publications. The collections also include a fairly sizable number of yearbooks and directories. It looks to me that if this acquisition trend continues, Mocavo.com will shortly become one of the top commercial online genealogical database providers along with Ancestry.com, MyHeritage.com, and findmypast.com (D.C. Thomson Family History).  Along with FamilySearch.org, it looks like developments in the coming year may force me to talk about the big five genealogy companies rather than the big four.

It is very interesting to review the records appearing on Mocavo.com, I am finding collections of records that I had never heard of previously. For example, the Arizona Historical Prison Register Index, 1866 – 1966. Fortunately, I did not find any of my ancestors in this particular index. Hmm.  Maybe I should change that statement, as a genealogist perhaps it wouldn't be such a bad idea to find someone in the index.

Keep an eye on Mocavo.com
