If you accept either the land bridge theory of arrival in the Americas or accept some cross oceanic influence, either way, ultimately everyone was an immigrant. Our family is traced back to the original immigrant, William Tanner, to Rhode Island around 1680 and he came from England, but his parents have not been positively identified. I am also aware of line of Tanners from Switzerland. So there is really know way I have of knowing right now where the family ultimately originated. In the 19th century, the people concerned had an approx. 90% death-rate due to epidemic diseases brought there by European settlers, with a further major contributing factor deprivation of way-of-life (notably the salmon fishery). I was able to trace some of my friend's ancestors to births in the 1840s-'60s, about the time family names were adopted.

BTW, I know very highly educated Native people who maintain their ancestors were in this hemisphere since forever - and who's to prove they are wrong?

S. Your family name is Tanner! I assume you belief you are of English decent. What would you say having the information that in Great Britain living atound 50 families ( most of them living in London or Wales) named Tanner, in Germany 459 and if you spell it Danner 1645. The US Census of 2000 shows 46412 persons. We know that early US records are very uncertain. So my simple question is: How many Tanner's are of German descent??
