County formation dates aren't common knowledge, and technically, the birth location isn't wrong. My mother was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, but at the time she was born, it was called Batavia, Dutch East-Indies. I think both are right. I would have an issue if someone listed it as Batavia, Indonesia, or Jakarta, Dutch East-Indies.
As for online trees without sources, don't forget you don't have to have a paid subscription to Ancestry to have an online tree, but you won't be able to add sources easily. They might have everything well documented in their offline tree.Tacohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04059717877562427778noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1527613590529958801.post-51554677170302507772012-09-14T18:55:36.025-07:002012-09-14T18:55:36.025-07:00James, a thoughtful approach to the extremely ques...James, a thoughtful approach to the extremely questionable notion of trees-as-research-tools. This approach is still official policy with respect to the two FamilySearch tree messes.

You say "I entered one of my Great-grandfathers into the Public Member Trees search of Ancestry.com. I found 242 trees. I didn't make an actual count, but most of the trees were "unsourced." Many had only one or two sources. The tragedy and irony of this is that for just my Great-grandfather, Ancestry.com has at least a dozen valid historical sources."

When one or two 'sources' are listed for Ancestry.com Member Trees, the sources are nearly always other trees.
Geoloverhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12050268303916428230noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1527613590529958801.post-57598126872012503922012-09-14T17:05:47.474-07:002012-09-14T17:05:47.474-07:00I'm glad to hear you've shared one of your...I'm glad to hear you've shared one of your trees online. If nothing else, it serves as a good example. Maybe someone else will follow it.

By the way, you used "there" incorrectly in "there unsourced trees." Does that nullify the credibility of your writing, in the same way that putting San Bernardino in a county that didn't exist yet nullifies the credibility of someone's online tree?Keith Rigglehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09211666785587732418noreply@blogger.com
