Taking the time to learn more about such "common" records as the United States Federal Census may seem superfluous, but part of understanding the information in the census records involves understanding the process of how the census information was acquired. Simply finding a census record and adding it as a "source" to your family tree is only the first step in a process of learning about the records. This can also be a pattern for learning about all types of records.
Blank United States Federal Census forms are available online from a number of different locations. Just do a Google search for the census year and form, i.e. "1870 census form" to find several types of forms. The National Archives has a page of forms, including each year of the census. See https://www.archives.gov/research/genealogy/charts-forms. The blank forms help with deciphering the headings when the digital images are not all that clear. This particular form had some specific instructions to the enumerators on the back of the sheet as noted in the asterisk comment at the bottom of the form. Here are those instructions:
Constitutional Relations
Upon the answers to the questions under this head will depend the distribution of representative power in the General Government. It is therefore imperative that this part of the enumeration should be performed with absolute accuracy. Every male person born within the United States, who has attained the age of 21 years, is a citizen of the United States by force of the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution (act of February 10, 1855); also, all persons born out of the limits and jurisdiction of the United States, whose fathers at the time of their birth were citizens of the United States, who have been declared by judgment of court to have been duly naturalized having taken out both “papers.”
The part of the enumerator’s duty which relates to column 19 is therefore easy, but it is none the less of importance. It is a matter of more delicacy to obtain the information required by column 20. Many persons never try to vote, and therefore do not know whether their right to vote is or is not abridged, It is not only those whose votes have actually been challenged, and refused at the polls for some disability or want of qualification, who must be reported in this column; but all who come within the scope of any State law denying or abridging suffrage to any class or individual on any other ground than participation in rebellion, or legal conviction of crime. Assistant marshals, therefore, will be required carefully to study the laws of their own States in these respects, and to satisfy themselves in the case of each male citizen of the United States above the age of 21 years, whether he does or does not, come within one of these classes.
As the Fifteenth Amendment to the Constitution, prohibiting the exclusion from the suffrage of any person on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude, has become the law of the land, all state laws working such exclusion have ceased to be of virtue, If any person is, in any State, still practically denied the right to vote by reason of any such State laws not repealed, that denial is merely an act of violence, of which the courts may have cognizance, but which does not come within the view of marshals and their assistants in respect to census.

Just a reminder, the numbers refer the the columns in the census forms.
- Number of dwelling house, by order of visitation from enumerator
- Number of family, by order of visitation from enumerator
- Name
- Age
- Sex
- Color: Enumerators could mark "W" for White, "B" for Black, "M" for Mulatto, "C" for Chinese [a category which included all east Asians], or "I" for American Indian.
- Profession, occupation, or trade
- Value of real estate
- Value of personal estate
- Place of birth: State or territory of the United States or foreign country
- Was the person's father of foreign birth?
- Was the person's mother of foreign birth?
- If the person was born within the last year, which month?
- If the person was married within the last year, which month?
- Did the person attend school within the last year?
- Can the person not read?
- Can the person not write?
- Is the person deaf and dumb, blind, insane, or idiotic?
- Is the person a male citizen of the United States of 21 years or upwards?
- Is the person a male citizen of the United States of 21 years or upwards whose right to vote is denied or abridged on grounds other than "rebellion or other crime?"

The National Archives explains the creation of Enumeration District Maps as follows:
An enumeration district, as used by the Bureau of the Census, was an area that could be covered by a single enumerator (census taker) in one census period. Enumeration districts varied in size from several city blocks in densely populated urban areas to an entire county in sparsely populated rural areas.
Enumeration district maps show the boundaries and the numbers of the census enumeration districts, which were established to help administer and control data collection. Wards, precincts, incorporated areas, urban unincorporated areas, townships, census supervisors` districts, and congressional districts may also appear on some maps. The content of enumeration district maps vary greatly. The base maps were obtained locally and include postal route maps, General Land Office maps, soil survey maps, and maps produced by city, county, and state government offices as well as commercial printers. Census officials then drew the enumeration district boundaries and numbers on these base maps.Here are the forms used in the 1880 U.S. Federal Census. You will note that there are two pages and the second page asked for information about health, education and nativity, however the original form has all this information on one page.

The 1880 Census again expanded the number of questions asked. Here is a list of those questions.
- Number of dwelling home, in order of visitation by the enumerator

- Is the person widowed or divorced? Enumerators were to mark "W" for widowed and "D" for divorced
- Was the person married within the census year?
- Profession, occupation, or trade
- Number of months the person had been employed within the census year
- Was, on the day of the enumerator's visit, the person was sick or disabled so as to be unable to attend to ordinary business or duties? If so, what was the sickness or disability?
- Was the person blind?
- Was the person deaf and dumb?
- Was the person idiotic?
- Was the person insane?
- Was the person maimed, crippled, bedridden, or otherwise disabled?
- Had the person attended school in the past year?
- Can the person not read?
- Can the person not write?
- What was the person's place of birth?
- What was the person's father's place of birth?
- What was the person's mother's place of birth?
Just as with the previous three years, each of the answers to the questions can suggest additional record searches. For example, don't forget to search land and property records in the place where you find your family in the census.
