Using Pictorial Maps

Pictorial maps are also called illustrated maps, panoramic maps, perspective maps, bird's-eye mpas and goepictorial maps. See Wikipedia: Pictorial maps.

It is necessary to view these maps at magnification to see the tremendous amount of detail. I became fascinated by pictorial maps from a map published by the Arizona Highways magazine from a map published in 1940 by George M. Avey. That map is still being published and sold by the Arizona Highways magazine.

There are thousands of these maps for places all around the world. The Cannonsburg map above shows the houses and even the outbuildings:


I would suppose that many genealogists would think that this type of map was nothing more than a novelty. But the perspective and historical views can often clarify details about the places where your ancestors lived. In any event, it is probably a good idea to lighten up once and while and add a little variety to the cloistered life of the seasoned, research genealogist.

Take Time for a Geographic Timeline -- Part Three What's in a name?

One of the basic rules of genealogical research is that of recording place names as they were at the time an event occurred in an ancestor's life. There are two implications of this policy: first, the use of the place name current at the time of the event, presupposes that the genealogist has done his or her homework and actually knows how the place was designated, and second, the further implication is that upon searching for records, the accurately recorded place name will assist the process of finding pertinent records.

This rule is based upon the principle that records are most likely to be found associated with the various jurisdictions in effect at the time of the event. For example, military records are most likely to be maintained by the country where the ancestor lived during the time such records were recorded. Records pertaining to marriages, deaths and births (christenings) were most like kept by the church with which the ancestor was affiliated. The examples could go on for each type of record.

From the time of the creation of the record, until the present time, the record could have migrated to another location. For example, a military record may have been created in an area of Europe that has changed hands several times since the date of the record's creation, thus causing the record to be moved as international boundaries changed. The same set of circumstances can happen on a much smaller scale in the United States as county boundaries change over time. Records created at the county level could have been moved as new counties were created from the old.

This rule concerning the accurate recording of the place of an event at the time the event occurred also presupposes that the place where the record has ultimately been found will also be recorded as a citation when the record is used to support a genealogical conclusion. The main point here is that the places, as they are named today, bear little or no relationship to the location of the records about the ancestor. For example, a record about a Native American ancestor may have been created on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota and is most likely presently maintained by the National Archives. If you were to find the records, you would ultimately learn that they are being maintained in the National Archives branch in Kansas City, Missouri. The purpose of the citation to a record is to provide a way for subsequent researchers to find the same records to verify the basis for the researcher's conclusions.

What about place names that have changed over time? One common mistake is to locate the place of an event in a town, city, county, state or country that did not even exist at the time of the event. This is sometimes done because the researcher is not aware of the changes in the name of the place, but most frequently is done out of simple negligence arising from a lack of awareness of the historical context of the record. I was recently asked a question about how to record a place when an event occurred before the U.S. Revolutionary War. The answer is simple and is best posed as a question: how was the place designated at the time of the event? I would further ask another question: is the name any different than the one used today? Let's suppose that the place was Plymouth, Massachusetts. How would I identify the place for an event that occurred in that place? Here are some suggested dates and places:
  • Plymouth Colony, New England or the Plymouth Council for New England prior to 1685; today the records might be in the U.S. or the U.K.
  • Plymouth, Plymouth County, Dominion of New England between 1686 to 1689
  • Plymouth, Massachusetts Bay Colony, Commonwealth of Massachusetts after 1691
  • Plymouth, Massachusetts of Massachusetts Bay after 1692
  • Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts 
  • Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States after 1776 (or 1882) depending on how you want to consider the issue
You could also consider the following: from 1643 to 1686 the area was included in the Massachusetts Bay Colony and some sources include the area in the New England Confederation from 1643. Now this is what I have found so far. If you happen to have any corrections you are very welcome to make a comment and I will correct the list. It turns out to be far from simple to figure out which organization had jurisdiction at what time. 

You may well ask why we need to go through all of those iterations? What we are doing is keeping track of the places where documents (records or sources) might be found. Each of those jurisdictions are likely to have records that are stored or maintained or, at least, cataloged differently than the next jurisdiction in time. As you can see from the list above, this can be a difficult task.

Take Time for a Geographic Timeline -- Part Two International Boundaries

Many genealogical researchers seem to lose track of the time element in their accumulation of names and dates. Commonly, I see the location of events before 1776 are said to have occurred in the United States of America, an historical impossibility. However, there are a number of researchers that feel that the place of an event should be recorded in its presently designated location. To the contrary, the best practice is to record the location of all events as the locations were designated at the time the events occurred.

Since many types of records are created in jurisdictions with geographic proximity to the events recorded, it important to recognize the jurisdictions responsible for those records. If they ignore this rule, researchers may find themselves looking for records in places where they do not exist. Additionally, tracing records to the present storage location is much easier if the researchers knows the political and social boundaries in place at the time of the event. One of the more common errors committed by inexperienced researchers is believing the references to places of birth of parents listed in the U.S. Census records. One example of this was a patron at the Mesa FamilySearch Library who was looking for his ancestor in "Austria" and found that the person spoke "Hungarian" and therefore was not an Austrian at all. The search in Austria was initiated by the reference in a U.S. Census record.

It is imperative that genealogical researchers become aware of not only the local but also the national history of the area in which they are conducting research. International boundaries change frequently. There is no substitute for examining maps made close to the time that events in the life of the ancestor occurred. There are fortunately huge collections of historical maps online. One of the most helpful websites is OldMapsOnline.org. This website provides links to hundreds of thousands of online maps in different areas of the world. The interface is extremely useful in that it lets you draw a rectangle around that portion of the world you wish to search for maps. The website then selects out all the maps that fall within the rectangle.

A significant challenge in determining the place of origin of an immigrant is determining the name of the place at the time the immigrant was born. In some parts of Eastern Europe it is possible that the same location has a name in more than one language. Some places in what is now Poland have place names in both Russian and German. It is important to search online for information concerning the previous name of various locations to attempt to ascertain what the place was called at the time. This is particularly true for places such as Poland that have undergone considerable political change.

It is also helpful to consult a variety of international gazetteers. Some of the most extensive online geographic databases include a one maintained by the US Board on Geographic Names a division of the United States Geological Survey. The Board maintains a list of domestic as well as worldwide names, many of which date back to historical times. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) contains more than 2 million physical and cultural features located throughout the United States of America and its territories. The National Geospatial – Intelligence Agency maintains the GEOnet Names Server (GNS)  which is the official repository of standard spellings of all poor and geographic names sanctioned by the United States Board on Geographic Names. The database also contains a variant spellings (cross references) which are useful for finding purposes, as well as non-Roman script spellings of many of these names. Once you begin the task of searching for a place, you will find that the task can seem to be overwhelmingly difficult due to the staggeringly large number of geographic resources online. The number of maps alone is overwhelming. However, this wealth of information indicates that there is really no excuse for being vague about a place as long as the research indicates a way to identify it properly.

Take Time for a Geographic Timeline -- Part One County Boundaries


One of the sad commentaries on the research efforts of many in our genealogical community is a complete lack of awareness of the historical context of times when their ancestors were living. The serious side effect of this lack of awareness is the fact they have no idea where to look for their ancestors when family tradition or the U.S. Census says that the family they are searching for came from "Germany" or even "Kentucky." I have been suggesting for years that every location for every individual be verified. Cities, counties, states and countries change over time.

The basic online, free tool for verifying the historical jurisdictional boundaries of any state or county in the United States is the Newberry Atlas of Historical County Boundaries shown in the image above. The Newberry Atlas has an interactive map of the entire United States and shows the county boundaries for any date in black superimposed on the current county boundaries in white. Here is a screenshot of Pennsylvania for July 4, 1776 as an example:


The website is fairly extensive and has the following sections:

OK, the list is very interesting. If you want an advanced look at your historical boundaries, you can download the KMZ File and open it in Google Earth. More about this later.

One of the common questions to ask any city-county-state designation you find reference to in someone's genealogy is whether or not the places existed at all and further whether they existed at the time referred to by the reference. People have a tendency to generalize geographic locations. I might be from a small town outside of a big city, but for convenience, I say I am from the big city. Historically, this can mislead a researcher because the actual location of the ancestral home is obscured. Another problem is the habit people have to refer to a general area of the country rather than a specific location. Many of our ancestors recorded their birthplace as "Ohio" or "Kentucky" long before these places became specific states. Early reference to births in Kentucky, for example before 1792, occurred when it was a county of Virginia. Lack of historical awareness can cause a domino effect of problems in locating the right ancestral line. 

Your homework assignment for this first installment of the series is to explore the resources in the Newberry Atlas of Historical County Boundaries. This assignment includes selecting random place locations from your pedigree and verifying that the county designations are "correct" in the sense that the counties existed at the time of supposed ancestral event. Lack of accuracy in this regard will result in choosing the wrong ancestral line when someone with a similar name is chosen rather than the correct ancestor because of the geographic mistake. I can assure you, you will find errors.

Understanding Real Property Legal Descriptions for Genealogy: Land Measurements

The way real property (land) is measured seems arbitrary, and if you are like me, it is difficult to visualize what is included in any particular unit of measurement. However, recognizing land areas and measurements are essential talents for genealogists who are doing any kind of historical research.

For example, here is a list of some of the more common methods of measurement:
  • acres 
  • square yards
  • square feet
  • fulongs
  • chains
  • kilometers
  • miles
There are, of course many more that could be added to the list. In reality, many of these methods are interrelated and by understanding the history, their relationship becomes evident. We recognize that there are two major divisions in the world of measuring things, including land; English and Metric. For the purposes of this post we really only need to deal with linear measurements and we can ignore weight, volume, temperature and speed. If we are talking about land, we can also ignore very small measurements such as centimeters and nanometers. Here are the two most common systems and their most common modern components:

English
  • inches
  • feet
  • yards
  • miles
Metric
  • millimeters (I know these are small but I have to start here anyway)
  • centimeters
  • meters
  • kilometers
Here is a quote from John Quincy Adams in a Report to the Congress in, 1821 as quoted in "A Brief History of Measurement Systems" from the NASA Technical Standards Program:
Weights and measures may be ranked among the necessaries of life to every individual of human society. They enter into the economical arrangements and daily concerns of every family. They are necessary to every occupation of human industry; to the distribution and security of every species of property; to every transaction of trade and commerce; to the labors of the husbandman; to the ingenuity of the artificer; to the studies of the philosopher; to the researches of the antiquarian; to the navigation of the mariner, and the marches of the soldier; to all the exchanges of peace, and all the operations of war. The knowledge of them, as in established use, is among the first elements of education, and is often learned by those who learn nothing else, not even to read and write. This knowledge is riveted in the memory by the habitual application of it to the employments of men throughout life.
If you want to dig into all sorts of old measurement units, you can see a list in the Wikipedia article on English Units. I am only going to discuss those units that are significant in genealogical research. Outside of the United States and historically in almost any country, the units of measurement may and often do vary from the current units used.

It is reported that many of the English measurement units were derived from body parts. This may be ultimately true in some instances, but many measurements are very ancient and it is possible that there are earlier systems of which we are no longer aware. Uniform measurement in England dates from around 1196 AD. Here is a list of some historic measurements and how they fit into the modern ones:
  • 12 lines = 1 inch 
  • 12 inches = 1 foot 
  • 3 feet = 1 yard 
  • 1760 yards = 1 mile 
  • 36 inches = 1 yard 
  • 440 yards = quarter mile 
  • 880 yards = half mile
  • 100 links = 1 chain 
  • 10 chains = 1 furlong 
  • 8 furlongs = 1 mile 
  • 4 inches = 1 hand 
  • 22 yards = 1 chain 
  • 5.5 yards = 1 rod, pole or perch 
  • 40 poles = 1 furlong
Here is how these measurements translate into area:
  • 144 square inches = 1 square foot 
  • 9 square feet = 1 square yard 
  • 4840 square yards = 1 acre
  • 1 furlong x 1 chain = 1 acre 
  • 1210 square yards = 1 rood 
  • 1 furlong x 1 pole = 1 rood 
  • 4 roods = 1 acre
  • 640 acres = 1 square mile
It is no coincidence that these measurement come out "even," they are related and exist because of the underlying measurements. You may also remember that a township is 36 square miles.

Understanding Real Property Legal Descriptions for Genealogy: Rectangular Survey, Part Two

In my last posts in this series, I discussed two different methods of describing real property. As I have pointed out, understanding maps, plats and land descriptions is a vital link in finding and identifying where ancestors lived. (See links below). There are three main types of land description in the United States (and elsewhere):
  • Metes and bounds
  • U. S. Public Land Survey
  • Lot and Block or subdivision survey
This particular post follows up with a discussion about how to read a land survey property description. First a short review.

A land survey starts with the establishment of a point of known location and elevation. Topographical mapping involves establishing bench marks, or locations of known elevation, in order to measure and draw slope angles. Surveying is normally conducted for the purpose of establishing boundaries for buying and selling land and so the starting point of the survey may or may not also be a bench mark. In the United States, the beginning point of the United States Land Survey is a monument located on the border of the states of Ohio and Pennsylvania, on the North side of the Ohio River. Surveying is both a science and an art and before the common use of geo-positioning technology (GPS or Global Positioning System) the accuracy of the positioning of the first survey point depended on the accuracy of other historical surveys and the degree of competency of the surveyor. Over the many years I have bought, sold and litigated issues involving real property, I have frequently encountered the limits of the accuracy of surveys. Unless genealogists are also involved in legal boundary dispute issues, they will be unlikely to become aware of the degree of accuracy of the historic surveys. I might add that years ago, boundary disputes involved differences that could be measured in feet. Today, disputes can involve differences measured in inches. Some of the earliest law cases I handled involved acrimonious battles over the location of a property boundary and in some cases, the decision of the court turned out to be arbitrary and simply wrong.

From a very simplified standpoint, working from and extending from a beginning survey point, the surveyors establish both a north/south line or the Principle Meridian and an east/west line of the Base Line. In the U.S., the land is then measured out into rectangular areas containing the same acreage. The U.S. Public Land Survey System (aka PLSS) is regulated by the U.S. Department of the Interior and the Bureau of Land Management. Here is a map of the states included in the PLSS showing the main survey lines for each state.

You will note from the map that the eastern part of the United States and Texas are not included in the PLSS. You can also see that some states have more than one set of survey lines. In Arizona, where the two different surveys meet, they are off by a significant amount and the difference wrecks havoc with land descriptions near the boundary of the two systems. Conveniently and on purpose, some of the lines form the boundaries between states. Throughout the U.S. there are a number of "base line roads" that are so named because they follow a survey base line (usually approximately).

Because of the curvature of the earth, every 24 miles north and south of the base line, Guide Meridians are surveyed and established. Also, every 24 miles east and west of the Principle Meridian, Standard Parallels are established. Guide Meridians and Standard Parallels are designated as first, second, third etc. For example, First Guide Meridian East, Second Guide Meridian East and etc. Also, Firsts Standard Parallel North, Second Standard Parallel North and etc.

These All of these lines are established by using astral location techniques. The 24 mile sections are then further divided into four, six mile sections called Townships.


At this point the survey shows the townships or areas of 36 square miles, six miles on a side. The next step is to survey the boundaries within the townships. Here is a diagram (you can see the sequence above in the post) of what the divisions look like:

The plat is labeled "theoretical" because many townships have physical features that limit the township from having a full 36 square miles. There are also places where larger tracts of land have not been further subdivided. Each individual square is called a Section and contains one square mile, usually approximately, and are consecutively numbered in a zig-zag pattern. The image above shows a township in the middle surrounded by parts of eight other townships. So Section No. 1 in the this township is surrounded by townships, counting clockwise, 2, 35, 36, 31, 6, 7, 12, 11, and back to 2.

You would think that if the country was marked out in Sections, that all land boundaries would follow the lines and be rectangular. Unfortunately, this is not the case. People still tended to sell land according the local conditions and land features so there are many oddly shaped parcels. The Sections are further broken down into smaller units. All this may seem to be arbitrary, but as I will cover in one of the next posts in this series, there are different ways of measuring land and these surveys are supported by measurements in "chains" which can be an actual physical chain of 66 feet. In this case, an acre is actually the area of 10 square chains. It all makes sense when you know the old systems of measurement.

If the lots end up being odd sizes, there is still the possibility that the legal for any given lot is not easily understood or found on a map. So here is a legal description of a lot according to the way the system works, see if you can plot out where it would lie in the section:
Southeast quarter of the southeast quarter of the northeast quarter, section thirteen, township two south, range two west. 
The shorthand for this description is:
SE1/4, SE1/4, NE1/4, Sec. 13, T2S., R2W
Here is another one to practice on.

S2 NE4; NW4 SE4; W2 NE4 SE4 SEC 6 T6N R30E EXC FOR A PORTION IN NW4 SE4.

Essentially, you have to take a piece of paper and draw it out. Carefully. Then you have to recite the description back as you look at what you have drawn. It helps to read the description from the right to the left and once you have it down, repeat it from left to right.

Understanding Real Property Legal Descriptions for Genealogy: Rectangular Survey, Part One

You may be familiar with the history of the first president of the United States, George Washington, but you may not be familiar with his early career as a surveyor and lifelong interest in maps, geography and cartography. See George Washington: Surveyor and Mapmaker from the Library of Congress. Quoting from this interesting article:
The George Washington Atlas, initially published in 1932 by the George Washington Bicentennial Committee, was the first attempt to compile a bibliography of maps drawn or annotated by George Washington. The atlas was conceived as part of the nationwide observance of the two hundredth anniversary of Washington's birth and identified 110 extant maps or surveys drawn or annotated by Washington.2 The editor, Colonel Lawrence Martin, chief of the Geography and Map Division, Library of Congress, attempted to list all known Washington maps and brought more than twenty new items to light. These range from Washington's first survey exercise in 1747 to his last survey of the Mount Vernon lands and include pencil sketches, pen and ink drawings, roughly drawn field surveys, and finished survey plats. Recent research has uncovered additional items not included in the 1932 inventory.3
Surveying and surveyors have been an integral part of our cultures and legal systems since ancient times. The current Public Land Survey System (PLSS), as illustrated above, is merely the most recent method of systematically mapping out land using a rectangular survey. Most recently, the system has been combined with GPS (Global Positioning System) to achieve a very high degree of accuracy. From a genealogical standpoint, understanding rectangular surveys is extremely important. As I mentioned in my previous post on metes and bounds, genealogists are likely to find valuable information about the location of their ancestors from the following:
  • deeds
  • rental or lease agreements
  • probate documents
  • gifts or bequests
  • sales contracts
  • tax documents
  • mortgages
  • deeds of trust
  • land warrants
  • trust documents
  • wills
and many other documents. 

Here is an example of the legal description of a piece of property using the PLSS or rectangular survey system:
. . . the following described property, situated in the Parish of Vernon, Louisiana, to-wit:- Southwest quarter of Southwest quarter (SW ¼ of SW ¼) and West Half of Southeast quarter of Southwest quarter (W½ SE¼ SW¼) of Section Eleven (11), Township Four (4) North of Range Eight (8) West, containing sixty (60) acres of land, more or less, together with the residence, garage, barns and garden used by J. H. Kurth, Jr. for the past ten (10) years, and also the garage building now being used as a pipe storage room, but there is excepted from this sale all other buildings and improvements on said property which are expressly reserved by the vendor.
A rectangular survey begins with the establishment of a base point. From when I was much younger, I knew there was a sandstone marker on the corner of South Temple and Main Street in Salt Lake City, Utah that marked the base point for the rectangular survey in Utah. Many communities in the United States have a road or highway named "baseline road." This road usually closely follows the original survey line running east and west. In effect, the rectangular survey is really an extension of the worldwide system of using latitude and longitude to determine exact locations on the earth's surface.

The definition of latitude (φ) and longitude (λ) on an ellipsoid of revolution (or spheroid). The graticule spacing is 10 degrees. The latitude is defined as the angle between the normal to the ellipsoid and the equatorial plane.
Historically, because of the limitations in the equipment being used, rectangular surveys did not do a good job of taking into account the curvature of the earth. Over long distances, the surveys would often start to drift. I am very familiar with a location in Arizona where two rectangular surveys meet and the section boundaries are off by nearly a quarter of a mile. 

The idea of the rectangular survey is that a baseline is surveyed running east and west starting at a base point established by observing the position of the stars or in other words, astronomical observations. Anciently, the instrument used to determine a person's position on the spherical earth was an astrolabe. The more modern instrument is called a sextant. Here is an image of an astrolabe:

Once a base point has been established, the initial survey line is made by using an instrument that tells the direction of the line. Historically, this was accomplished with a compass. In more modern times, that function is accomplished with the use of an instrument called a transit or theodolite. Here is an image of a transit:

The transit or theodolite is used to establish a straight line from a certain point to be used in the measurement of a map or land boundary. After a baseline in defined and mapped, another line is established at a right angle to the original baseline. This north/south line is called the Meridian. If you look at the first image above, you will see a diagram illustrating the baseline and meridian. All other measurements are taken from the point at which the two lines intersect.

Understanding Real Property Legal Descriptions for Genealogy: Metes and Bounds

One of the keys to accurate and complete genealogical research is finding the exact location of some event associated with an ancestor. Real property rental or ownership is one very good way to determine an exact location associated with your ancestor's life. Some of the documents you may find that might contain a property description, often referred to as the legal description (or even the "legal"), include:
  • deeds
  • rental or lease agreements
  • probate documents
  • gifts or bequests
  • sales contracts
  • tax documents
  • mortgages
  • deeds of trust
  • land warrants
  • trust documents
  • wills
and many other documents. Historically, land has been described in three different ways:

  • Metes and Bounds
  • Rectangular Survey
  • Subdivision Lot and Block

Sometimes, the differences between these systems are blurred and a legal description may contain elements of two or all three of the methods. The important thing to understand is that the legal description is a method of representing the boundary of the property in words. These legal description methods are not confined to the United States, they are used around the world.

The original method of establishing the boundaries of piece of real property was by reference to physical objects such as trees, rivers, lakes, rocks, or other such objects. For example, a prominent tree or rock outcropping would be chosen as the starting point and then measuring the distance to other physical objects. This type of description is what is meant by the terms "metes and bounds." Here is the definition of the terms from Wikipedia:
  • Metes. The term "metes" refers to a boundary defined by the measurement of each straight run, specified by a distance between the terminal points, and an orientation or direction. A direction may be a simple compass bearing, or a precise orientation determined by accurate survey methods.
  • Bounds. The term "bounds" refers to a more general boundary description, such as along a certain watercourse, a stone wall, an adjoining public road way, or an existing building.
Here is a commonly referred to example of a metes and bounds description:
Commencing at a heap of stones about a stone’s throw from a certain small clump of alders, near a brook running down off from a rather high part of the ridge, thence by a straight line to a certain marked white birch tree about two or three times as far from a jog in the fence going around said ledge and the “Great Swamp” so called, then in a line of said lot in part and in part by another piece of fence which joins onto said line, and by an extension of the general run of said fence to a heap of stones near a surface rock, thence aforesaid to the “Horn” so called and passing around the same aforesaid, as far as possible, to the “Great Bend” so called, and from thence to a squarish sort of jog in another fence so on to a marked black oak tree with stones around it and thence by another straight line in about a contrary direction and somewhere about parallel with the line around by the “Great Swamp” to a stake and stone mounds not far off from an old Indian trail, thence by another straight line on a course diagonally parallel, or nearly so, with “Fox Hollow” run, so called, to a certain marked yellow oak tree on the off side of a knoll with flat stones laid against it, thence after turning around in another direction and by a sloping straight line to a certain heap of stones which is by pacing just 18 rods more from the stump of the big hemlock tree where Philo Blake killed the bear, thence to the corner begun at by two straight lines of about equal length which are to be run in by some skilled and competent surveyor so as to include the area and acreage as herein set forth.
Unfortunately, I cannot find where this particular description originated. It may be made up for illustration purposes, but it is often referred to by those talking about boundary descriptions. The main problem with such descriptions is that the physical objects chosen to describe the property often are destroyed or move over time. For genealogists, trying to locate property from such a description can be a nightmare. Current property boundaries that were historically based on metes and bounds descriptions may have been supplanted by another, more recent survey method. However, even today when the waypoints (Waypoints are sets of coordinates that identify a point in physical space) for a description may have been established by exact survey points, unless the survey is tied into a rectangular survey, the description may still be referred to as a metes and bounds description.

Early in the European settlement of America, land descriptions might refer to adjacent property owners. If the genealogical researcher expands the scope of his or her inquiry, sometimes the land descriptions can give the names of other members of a the extended family or even the maiden names of married women.

Where did your ancestors live? -- An Introduction to parcel maps

My recently post on cadastral mapping points out an interesting fact: local tax records usually indicate where and when people lived in a particular place. Since determining the exact location of an event in an ancestor's life is often crucial in determining his or her identity, any resource that can give an exact location is invaluable.

My early experience with these important records was in researching town records in Rhode Island. I found that most of the documents associated with land or land transfers were in these records. In a quick search on FamilySearch.org, I find only six collections of digitized town records. So most of these records, at least on FamilySearch.org, are still available only on microfilm. A search on Ancestry.com shows more town related documents, with over 600 falling in this category.

Beginning in 1867, the Sanborn Map Company began publishing insurance maps of cities in the United States. There are various collections online. The map above comes from a collection at the University of Utah, J. Willard Marriott Library. There are over 660,000 of these maps available, many online. The largest collections of these maps are in the Library of Congress and online. Search for "fire insurance maps" on Google.

The corresponding maps for the rural part of the United States are on "county atlases." These maps can be quite detailed and show individual parcels and ownership. For example, the Map Collection of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum CommissionBureau of Archives and History, Pennsylvania State Archives contains Pennsylvania County Atlases and Maps from the 1850s-1870s.  Here is an example showing the individual property owners:

You can download these maps and zoom in and see the individual lot owners.

Another way to approach this research is by searching in the online records maintained by individual counties. These are usually maintained by county recorders and/or assessors. There is a portal to these records maintained by Nationwide Environmental Title Research, LLC. For example, using their Public Records Online Directory, I clicked on Utah, then Utah County and found the website for the Utah County Recorder online. Within seconds, I found the chain of title to my own property in Provo. These records contained a legal description of the entire subdivision development. Here is an example of a legal description from that source:

This brings up another issue. In many cases, to interpret the land records you find, you will need to know how to read the legal descriptions and further, how to place those descriptions on a larger map. Very often, the county will include a way to look at the parcels and ownership. Here is an example from the Utah County Parcel Map:


Early land acquisition records in the United States are also a valuable genealogical source. In future posts, I will explain how to read the above legal description and others both recent and historical. I will also explore some of the other detailed land records in the United States dating back to the times of the earliest settlers.

Don't Ignore Migration Patterns and Routes

One of the most ignored areas of genealogical research is the issue of migration routes. All too often I will see an online family tree record with a person listed as living in a certain location and then moving to another location that does not make any sense. Usually, it turns out that the second person is in fact a different person. If you find information about an ancestor that runs counter to the normal migration pattern, this is an invitation to do more intensive research into the history surrounding the family.

In the map above, you can see the concentrations of Scotch-Irish immigration in the United States. Contrast this with following map of Lithuanian immigrants:

Of course, maps such as these do not tell the entire story. Here is a description of the distribution of Lithuanian immigrants from Wikipedia:
Chicago, Illinois, is home to the second largest population of Lithuanians in the world, and the old "Lithuanian Downtown" in Bridgeport was once the center of Lithuanian political activity for the whole United States. Another large Lithuanian community can be found in the Coal Region of northeastern Pennsylvania, particularly in Schuylkill County where the small borough of New Philadelphia has the largest percentage of Lithuanian Americans (20.8%) in the United States. There is also a large community of Lithuanian descent in the coal mining regions of Western Pennsylvania, northern West Virginia Panhandle and Northeastern Ohio tri-state area. Grand County, Colorado's Lithuanian-American community has the unusual distinction in that it is the only sizable immigrant population in an otherwise fairly homogeneous population in a rural, mountainous community. There is also a small but vibrant Lithuanian community in Presque Isle, Maine. Many Lithuanian refugees settled in Southern California after World War II; they constitute a community in Los Angeles.
To begin to understand how populations move both across international boundaries and inside specific countries, it is necessary to do both general and very specific historical research. But the real question is how is this going to help me find my ancestors? Inexperienced genealogists focus on names and dates. As we gain experience, we expand our searches to include the social, political and economic backgrounds of our ancestor's surroundings.

Since people tend to congregate into areas that have similar social, economic, racial, cultural and religious backgrounds. As we learn about and analyze these factors, we can explain seemingly random movements.  For example, why did I move from Mesa, Arizona with a high concentration of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Provo, Utah, another place with a high concentration of members of the same Church? The more you know about my background and values, the easier it would be to understand the move.

If that question does not seem important to you, then you are missing one of the most basic of genealogical research issues; the forces behind the movements of your ancestors. Those forces can be said to push people to move and also pull them. For example, one branch of my family came from Northern Ireland. The ancestor that immigrated with his family was William Linton (b. 1799 in Northern Ireland, d. 1851 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) From the dates and places where his children were born, I can determine that he moved from Northern Ireland to New Brunswick, Canada in about 1835. Why then? Even a very modest investigation into the history of Ireland in the 1800s will give one very good answer: from 1801, Ireland had been on the verge of disaster. Here is a brief description of the conditions from Wikipedia: Great Famine (Ireland):
Starting in 1801, Ireland had been directly governed, under the Act of Union, as part of the United Kingdom. Executive power lay in the hands of the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and Chief Secretary for Ireland, both of whom were appointed by the British government. Ireland sent 105 members of parliament to the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, and Irish representative peers elected 28 of their own number to sit for life in the House of Lords. Between 1832 and 1859, 70% of Irish representatives were landowners or the sons of landowners.[10] 
In the 40 years that followed the union, successive British governments grappled with the problems of governing a country which had, as Benjamin Disraeli put it in 1844, "a starving population, an absentee aristocracy, and an alien Church, and in addition the weakest executive in the world."[11] One historian calculated that between 1801 and 1845, there had been 114 commissions and 61 special committees enquiring into the state of Ireland and that "without exception their findings prophesied disaster; Ireland was on the verge of starvation, her population rapidly increasing, three-quarters of her labourers unemployed, housing conditions appalling and the standard of living unbelievably low."[12] (footnotes left in on purpose).
 Could there have been better reasons for moving to America?

On the other hand, migrants may be pulled to a new land. Examples in the United States are numerous; the 1849 gold rush to California, the Oklahoma land rush of 1889 and many other examples. Many of my own ancestors came to America because they joined the LDS Church.

If you are not aware of the factors that affected your ancestors' movements, you will lose them in the shuffle. Many times, when searching for the next ancestor, the researcher ignores the factors that placed the family where it was. We always point out that we begin the search for an immigrant in the country of arrival, but we always need to look to the reasons that made the immigrant move in the first place.
