I got a comment recently that said, "I need to save hundreds of photos from my computer. What is the best way to do this? I want to be able to access them in years to come." This comment brings up the hot topic of digital preservation. When I use the term "digital preservation," I mean preservation of digital files, not the preservation of physical objects by digitization. One of the main forums for digital preservation is the
Digital Preservation section of the Library of Congress. This website is the home for the
National Digital Stewardship Alliance,
Digital Preservation Outreach and Education and the
National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program. The scope of the effort by the Library of Congress is an indication of the need to archive and actively manage your digital archives.
I am not going to rehash everything on the Library of Congress video but I do have an active participation in the entire issue of digital preservation.
