RootsMagic syncs sources to FamilySearch Family Tree

For some time now, we have been waiting for the third-party programs to synchronize data with FamilySearch.org's Family Tree program. RootsMagic announced that it is the first program to synchronize sources. Of course, this isn't a big deal for those who have few or no sources attached to their RootsMagic files, but for those who do, it is a great time-saver. The announcement involves references to FamilySearch's system of third-party classification:

  1. RootsMagic is Now Share+ Certified by FamilySearch (which for one thing means you can now view and copy sources between RootsMagic and FamilySearch).
  2. On June 30th, RootsMagic (and other products) will no longer be able to write to the (old) "New FamilySearch" site.
You will notice also that the cutoff date for the old programs sharing data with New.FamilySearch.org is 30 June 2013, less than ten days away. It is very likely that there will be a lot of genealogists out there that will have a rude surprise after that date that their programs no longer work until they obtain an update.

FamilySearch lists its certified products on a Family History Products page. That page is actually on the FamilySearch.org website. You can click through to the page by going to the very bottom of the startup page and then clicking on the "About" link. You will then see a link to "Products" that has a list of the most recently certified products in different categories. There is also a prominent note about the cutoff of access to New.FamilySearch.org. The big question, as yet not publicly answered, is when public access to New.FamilySearch.org will be cut off, not just access through third parties.

  1. I have used Rootsmagic for years. I recently purchased yet another copy of the software for my new Windows 8 machine. That machine just updated itself to Windows 8.1 Now Rootsmagic will not run any reports - and I haven't tested other functions. I get an error message. When I contacted Rootsmagic, I got a reponse that they have no idea what the error message means and that their programmer says it is a "windows" problem. Anyone know any good software - I apparently need to switch???????
